Synopsis
Siren: The Voices of Shelley Beattie is a documentary about Shelley Beattie, a Deaf woman who became a champion bodybuilder and later gained fame as “Siren” on the TV show American Gladiators. The film explores her life, achievements, and struggles, including how being Deaf shaped her experiences.
Some reasons it may be especially interesting to Deaf audiences:
- Shelley Beattie was one of the few Deaf professional female bodybuilders in the world.
- The documentary is framed in part through the perspective of Marlee Matlin, who draws parallels between her own experiences and Shelley’s.
- It addresses Deaf identity, sign language, accessibility, and the challenges of navigating fame as a Deaf person.
The documentary also covers other themes, including mental health, addiction, sexuality, and Shelley’s tragic death.
