TRANSCRIPT:

Hello – just want to let you know – I saw a tweet by deaf actress Amber Zion that there was a new movie released on Netflix today – “Hush”. It is about a deaf woman – who is alone in a house in the woods – and there is a killer stalking her. Check out this trailer.

This actress who plays the deaf woman? She is a hearing woman. Her name is Kate Siegel and she also co-wrote this movie. Her husband is the director, Mike Flanagan – hearing – and co-writer.

The ASL in it is “okay”. Check out this clip.

Nice to see ASL in a movie, but this in an opportunity that is taken away from the deaf community. We have #deaftalent and many talented deaf actresses who could have landed that role. Is it okay for Hollywood and the entertainment industry to use ASL and deaf culture without involving deaf people?

You can check it out on Netflix – Hush – and you can tweet your thoughts and feelings to Netflix with this hashtag #DEAFTALENT
